About The County Paper (Oregon, Mo.) 1881-1883
The Oregon Holt County Sentinel began publication on June 30, 1865, in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri. Founded by Charles W. Bowman, the four-page weekly was published on Fridays, from July 1865 through July 1869.
In 1869, the paper was purchased by Adam Klippel, who assumed the role of editor and publisher until October 1876 at which time William W. Davenport took over ownership. Davenport published the paper through the summer of 1881 when he sold it to David Pollock Dobyns, who oversaw the changing of the name to the County Paper. Dobyns also expanded the paper to eight pages but retained its Friday publication schedule.
During April of 1881, the Missouri River overflowed its banks, and the surrounding river valley suffered inestimable loss. Due to the flooding, transportation was restricted, and the supply of paper to Oregon was affected. This caused one issue of the paper to be printed on manila wrapper paper which was gathered from around the town of Oregon: “Of course all travel is suspended; and a suggestive sign of the effect on business is found in the fact that, on account of our inability to get printing paper, we are compelled to issue a large portion of this issue of the County Paper printed on wrapper paper—and only a half-sheet, at that!” (April 29, 1881).
The County Paper continued publication until 1883 when David Pollock Dobyns and Thomas Curry became co-owners and returned the title to the Holt County Sentinel . Dobyns took care of the editorial end while Curry looked after the business and mechanical side. The paper varied in length from 4 to 14 pages, but it continued as a weekly publication each Friday and did not cease until 1980. According to The History of Holt and Atchison Counties, the paper was always Republican in its politics.
