About El Progreso (Phoenix, Ariz.) 1???-19??

Like many historical newspapers, there are almost no extant issues of El Progreso, a Spanish-language newspaper published weekly in Phoenix, Arizona, by Pedro Garcia de la Lama. According to Rowell’s American Newspaper Directory (1902), El Progreso was established in 1898, and the four-page newspaper was published “every morning except Sunday.”

The masthead of the surviving issue described the focus of the newspaper: “Seminario Politico Democrata, de Noticias Variedades, Literatura y Anuncias“, a Democratic paper that included news, literature, and advertisements. Most of the front page of this issue, from November 8, 1902, is devoted to announcing the death of de la Lama’s wife. A few advertisements also grace the front page, including one for “The Owl” Cantina, “La Mas Elegante de la Ciudad” (“The Most Elegant in the City”).

Before moving to Arizona, de la Lama had been involved in the publication of several newspapers in New Mexico in the 1890s, including El Defensor del Pueblo, El Demócrata, and La Opinión Pública. After El Progreso ceased, de la Lama went on to publish other newspapers in Phoenix, Justicia, and its successor El Machete.
