About La Voz Del Pueblo (Tucson, Ariz.) 194?-194?

La Voz del Pueblo was a four-page weekly newspaper published in the 1940s in Tucson, Arizona, but only a single issue of the Spanish-language paper exists today. The slogan in the newspaper’s masthead was “Del Pueblo, Por El Pueblo Y Para El Pueblo” (“Of the People, By the People and For the People”), and it was edited by Evodio Rojo.

Rojo was active in the Alianza Hispano Americana (Hispano American Alliance), a mutual aid society, serving as an officer in the civic and political organization as early as the 1920s in the lodge of Williams, Arizona, and later in Tucson. Rojo also participated in the Junta Patriótica (Patriotic Council), planning Mexican Independence Day activities in Williams and Tucson. In 1927, he contributed to the Williams NewsPágina En Espanol” (“Spanish Page”), writing editorials and managing content.

El Machete, a Spanish-language newspaper published in Phoenix, commented in its issue of July 18, 1942, that La Voz del Pueblo was “redactado por la viril pluma de nuestro antiguo conocido, Sr. Evodio Rojo” (“written by the virile pen of our old acquaintance, Mr. Evodio Rojo”). There is little other mention of the newspaper.

The surviving issue of La Voz del Pueblo is full of columns and advertisements about political candidates for various offices, from U.S. senator for Arizona to Pima County sheriff. There were multiple public service announcements in English, encouraging the purchase of war bonds, and a brief news item, “Uno De Los Nuestros Condecorado” (“One of Ours Decorated”), about a member of the local Hispanic community receiving a military award.

The June 3, 1944 issue indicates that it was in the third year of publication for La Voz del Pueblo; it is unclear how long the paper was published.
