About The Aberdeen Democrat (Aberdeen, South Dakota) 1???-1909

South Dakota’s Aberdeen Democrat was a weekly paper originally published by George B. Daly. The first issue was published on Friday, December 23, 1887, in Aberdeen’s Pioneer Building. The paper had six columns, with its page length varying between two and eight pages. For a brief time, the Democrat was published on Wednesdays, before returning to Friday publication in November of 1902. The final issue was published on Friday, April 19, 1909, after which the title was changed to the Dakota Democrat.

The Aberdeen Democrat was originally titled the Aberdeen Pioneer and owned by D.C. Wadsworth in 1881. Less than a year later, the title was changed to the Aberdeen Republican to avoid confusion with another area paper, the Dakota Pioneer. After changing hands many times, the paper finally was bought by George B. Daly in 1898, who changed its title to the Aberdeen Democrat. Even though Daly owned the paper, the first publishers were C.C. Fetcher and Searle. Daly took over as editor sometime between August 17, 1900, and October 22, 1902. On October 20, 1906, Daly sold the Aberdeen Democrat to George P. Willmarth, who would later rename the paper the Dakota Democrat.

The main audience of the Aberdeen Democrat was not just residents of the city of Aberdeen alone, but people throughout Brown County, both farmers and businessmen. Regular features included a Railroad Directory, Weekly Market Report, as well as a foreign news section. Many of the Democrat’s editors were vocal about their political opinions, especially when opposing Republicans in office. On April 8, 1904, for example, Daly wrote, “it is sincerely to be hoped that the active element in city politics who control the Republican caucuses and through them the Republican party, and by it the city, may be gracious enough this year to give the good people of Aberdeen a far better administration of city affairs than their civic patriotism, too week [sic] as a rule to rise above party, entitles them to.”

The Democrat had many competitors and was often badgered by the other Aberdeen papers. Eight years after it was renamed the Dakota Democrat, the paper moved to Mobridge, South Dakota, where it continued in print until 1921.
