About this Item

Title
The International Mark Twain Society
Summary
In this segment of From the Vaults, we discuss The International Mark Twain Society. The Society was founded in 1930 by Cyril Clemens as a social and literary discussion group, and later sent its book collection to the Library of Congress to form a Society collection in the Rare Book & Special Collections Division. The collection encompasses books published between the late 19th century and the late 1950s, and includes works in Irish, French, Finnish, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, German, and Czech. Notable writers were selected by the Society as Knights or Daughters of Mark Twain, and asked to send in a copy of one of their works - specifically, one that they considered their favorite. The collection exhibits a wide range of styles of book design, which reflect what designers thought would appeal to everyday consumers.
