Title
- Otra piel para otra entraña: Another Skin for my Insides
Summary
This video is a filmed performance of the "Otra piel para otra entraña" book-dress in the Hispanic Reading Room of the Library of Congress featuring Ruth Behar wearing the piece. Acquired by the Library in 2018, This one-of-a-kind performative work of poetry takes the shape of a black bridal gown that readers unfurl in a celebration of Cuban and American Women poets. Created by Rolando Estévez, the dress includes 45 scrolls containing poems and illustrations, and comes with black and white veils, bouquets, masks and fans. Designed for Ruth Behar herself, the dress pays homage to Cuban women poets and American women poets.
The gown comes to life as readers unscroll the poems, altering its color and form, while illustrating poetry's transformative power. One among a rich collection of more than 200 Estévez-inspired artists' books at the Library of Congress, "Otra piel para otra entraña" adds to the Library's Latin American and American holdings. It serves as an extraordinary tribute to women poets such as Joy Harjo, Emilia Bernal, Nancy Morej??n, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks and Emily Dickinson, to name a few. This piece also features poetry included in two of the Library's most important literary audio archives: the Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature and the PALABRA Archive.
