  • Hajji Ahmed, is a rare Turkish Heart-Shaped wall map of the World, printed in Venice in 1795 with Turkish text dated 1559-1560, printed in Arabic movable type. The Library of Congress has one of the few existing copies of this remarkable map in the Geography and Manuscripts Division. Recent research by Dr. Silvia Pugliese on the history and technique of papermaking in the Venice region casts new light on the special large sized papers made there for map-making, export and domestic use during the 18th century, including the paper made especially for this map, and for the Middle-Eastern export market. The Marciana National Library in Venice, where Dr. Pugliese is Director for Conservation, has both the original wood blocks carved for creating this map, and two early copies of the printed map.
