Title

  • From Lima to Canton: New Digital Tools for Painting Analysis

Summary

  • The international project From Lima to Canton used scientific analysis to study works of art from numerous institutions in the U.K. and United States. What started as a project aimed at differentiating between similar paintings generated in Canton, China and Lima, Peru, resulted in a major effort to map the global distribution of artists materials and methods in these and similar works. The large scale of the project necessitated the development of new research tools and more efficient ways of working. This presentation focuses on the new AI assisted digital tools developed during the course of the research project. Speakers address the application of new digital tools and workflows to the analysis of paintings using the Heritage Materials Research Platform developed in the project From Lima to Canton I. The program begins with an overview of the project that focuses on research on the global exchange of artists techniques and materials from 1750 to 1850 and on how the international team worked together to achieve the aims of the project II. It then discusses the new workflow developed III. The digital tools to streamline the workflow from data collection to interpretation.
