  • -  Everett Alvarez was the first American aviator shot down over North Vietnam and was held as a prisoner of war for eight and a half years. He went on to serve as deputy director of the Peace Corps, deputy administrator of the Veterans Administration, vice president for government services with the Hospital Corporation of America and currently serves as chair of the VA CARES Commission. He co-authored two books: "Chained Eagle," with Anthony S. Pitch, about his captivity; and "Code of Conduct/An Inspirational Story of Self-Healing by the Famed Ex-POW and War Hero," with Samuel Schreiner, about his return and life afterward. He lives in Rockville, Md.
