  • -  Garvin is the chief scientist of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate Office at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He advises senior leaders of NASA on matters that range from how science fits into the future of human exploration of space to the basic scientific research and development priorities for the agency and center. Garvin came to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 1984 as a staff scientist. He received a bachelor¿¿¿s degree and a Ph.D. from Brown University and a master¿¿¿s degree from Stanford. He was the lead scientist on the NASA team that restructured Mars exploration in 2000 and received two NASA Outstanding Leadership medals for his work developing the highly successful strategy behind the current Mars Exploration Program and also for his leadership in the formulation of the science role of the Mars Exploration Rover Mission, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Mars Science Lab.
