Cathy Marshall speaks about the ownership of digital items and how common it is for most of us to deliberately ignore the rights of creators of digital objects if we have little chance to be held accountable. The results of Marshall's survey-based research are evidence of how people actually do things as opposed to how we'd like people to do things; her discoveries are a reality check for us in our efforts to educate the general public about best practices. These survey results are often a humbling reminder about the truths of human nature. Marshall presents evidence from a number of studies to illustrate the challenges that arise from the nature of digital material, including the unique challenges of social media and the complexities of ownership.

-  Cathy Marshall is principal researcher at Microsoft Research's Silicon Valley Lab. Her research and publications span the fields of social science, information technology and computer science. For over half a decade, she has been a leading authority on personal digital archiving and the person whose research is most often quoted by other researchers of personal digital archiving.
