Notes

  • -  Adrian Miller is a lawyer and politico-turned-foodie, and his mission as a writer is to celebrate the history of soul food and ensure its rightful place in American cuisine. In his first book, "Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time," Miller gives an across-the-board look at soul food dishes, exploring their historical context as well as what these dishes mean to African Americans. The book explains each food item, how it got on the soul food plate and the food's importance to African-American culture. He also provides both traditional and contemporary ways to prepare each dish. "Soul Food" has received many honors, among them the 2014 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Reference and Scholarship and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association's 2013 Honor Book for Nonfiction.
