-  When Jewell Parker Rhodes discovered while growing up in Manchester, a largely African-American neighborhood on the north side of Pittsburgh, that there were novels by and for African Americans, she decided to become an author. Rhodes is the author of "Ninth Ward," a Coretta Scott King honor book; "Sugar," winner of the Jane Adams Peace Association book award; "Bayou Magic"; and "Towers Falling." She has also written many award-winning books for adults. Her newest book is the New York Times best-selling "Ghost Boys" (Little, Brown). Rhodes is a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow.
