- - Madeleine Albright served from 1997 until 2001 as the first woman secretary of state. She was born in the former Czechoslovakia, and her family immigrated to the United States in 1948. She followed in her father's footsteps by also becoming a diplomat. Prior to being secretary of state, she was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She is the author of several books, including her newest: "Fascism: A Warning" (HarperCollins).
