REVISED:
NAME: Defining a Field for a Subject Added Entry of Unspecified Entity Type in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format
SOURCE: German National Library, for the Committee on Data Formats
SUMMARY: This paper proposes defining new field "670" to accommodate a subject added entry in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format when the type of entity is unspecified.
KEYWORDS: Field 670 (BD); Subject Added Entry - Type of Entity Unspecified (BD)
RELATED: 2019-DP03
STATUS/COMMENTS:
05/22/19 – Made available to the MARC community for discussion.
06/22/19 – Results of MARC Advisory Committee discussion: Approved, with the following amendments:
08/02/19 - Results of MARC Steering Group review - Agreed with the MAC decision.
In the Bavarian Library Network, the Gnomon Thesaurus is used for providing subject access in bibliographic records. Other smaller thesauri will be used in the future for similar purposes, e.g. the "Index Didacticorum". More information about the Gnomon Thesaurus is available at http://www.englisch.gnomon-online.de. Manuals containing a list of the thesaurus can be downloaded at https://www.philhist.uni-augsburg.de/lehrstuehle/geschichte/alte/projekte/GBD/Gnomon_Download/.
The Gnomon Thesaurus has unique identifiers for each of its entries, e.g. "TH000005178" is the identifier for "Christian Literature" / "Christliche Literatur". URIs identifying single entries in the Gnomon Thesaurus are not (yet) provided. The Gnomon Thesaurus itself has an ISIL serving as a MARC Organization Code, "DE-2581", which is resolved using the URL http://sigel.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/nc/suche/?isil=DE-2581.
Using the Gnomon Thesaurus for subject added entries poses a problem: The fields in the 6XX range which show by their field number which type of entity is given as added entry (600, 610, 611, 630, 647, 648, 650, 651, 662) cannot be used, because the thesaurus itself does not provide this piece of information, and it can't be included retroactively either, due to the size of the thesaurus (approximately 13,000 terms). Using field 650 (Subject Added Entry – Topical Term) by default is not an option, because many of the entities in the Gnomon Thesaurus are not topical terms, but persons, etc.
From the perspective of the IFLA Library Reference Model (IFLA LRM), the new field covers the relationship "WORK has as subject RES" (LRM-R12), and its inverse relationship "RES is subject of WORK" (LRM-R12i).
The preceding Discussion Paper explored several options: The existing field 653 (Index Term – Uncontrolled) was analyzed, and a new field with one of the field numbers "620", "652", or "670" was discussed.
During the meeting of the MARC Advisory Committee in January 2019 there was understanding of the need outlined in the Discussion Paper. An added entry as described in the paper was not seen as "uncontrolled", but rather, as a type of entity that is "unspecified". There was broad agreement that a new field should be defined, with a tag chosen outside the existing 600-655 MARC sequence. In addition to the subfields $a, $0, $1 and $2 mentioned in the paper, MAC recommended that subfields $e, $g, $3, $4, $6, and $8 be considered for inclusion in the new field.
In the MARC Bibliographic Format, the following fields are defined in the 6XX block of "Subject Access Fields":
600 - Subject Added Entry - Personal Name
610 - Subject Added Entry - Corporate Name
611 - Subject Added Entry - Meeting Name
630 - Subject Added Entry - Uniform Title
647 - Subject Added Entry - Named Event
648 - Subject Added Entry - Chronological Term
650 - Subject Added Entry - Topical Term
651 - Subject Added Entry - Geographic Name
653 - Index Term - Uncontrolled
654 - Subject Added Entry - Faceted Topical Terms
655 - Index Term - Genre/Form
656 - Index Term - Occupation
657 - Index Term – Function
658 - Index Term - Curriculum Objective
662 - Subject Added Entry - Hierarchical Place Name
69X - Local Subject Access Fields
Field 670 was one of the options in the preceding Discussion Paper. It is outside the range of the existing 600-655 MARC sequence, and it leaves sufficient space for additions should the need arise later.
We propose the definition of the following new field in the Bibliographic format:
Field 670 – Subject Added Entry - Type of Entity Unspecified (R)
Subject added entry in which the entity type of the entry element is unspecified. The field is used if no information is available to which type the entity used as subject heading belongs.First Indicator: Undefined
# - UndefinedSecond Indicator: Source of name, title, or term
# - No information provided
7 - Source specified in subfield $2Subfield Codes
$a – Name, title, or term (NR)
Name, title, or term used as subject heading.$e - Relator term (R)
Specifies the relationship between the heading and the described materials.$g - Miscellaneous information (R)
Data element that is not more appropriately contained in another defined subfield.$0 - Authority record control number or standard number (R)
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.$1 - Real World Object URI (R)
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.$2 - Source of name, title, or term (NR)
MARC code that identifies the source list from which the subject added entry was assigned. It is used only when the second indicator position contains value 7 (Source specified in subfield $2). Code from: Subject Heading and Term Source Codes.$3 - Materials specified (NR)
Part of the described materials to which the field applies.$4 - Relationship (R)
Code or URI that specifies the relationship from the entity described in the record to the entity referenced in the field. More than one relationship code or URI may be used if the entity has more than one relationship. A source of relationship codes is: MARC Code List for Relators.$6 - Linkage (NR)
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.$8 - Field link and sequence number (R)
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.
During its meeting in January 2019, the MARC Advisory Committee noted that fields equivalent to the new field in the 6XX block may be considered in the 1XX and 7XX blocks. The existing field 720 (Added Entry - Uncontrolled Name) can in some respect be used for an agent whose type of entity is unspecified. There may be the need for having a similar field for a Main Entry, i.e. in the 1XX block, but this would go beyond the scope of this proposal.
In addition, the possibility was raised to define equivalent fields for headings and tracings of unspecified entity types in the MARC Authority format, i.e. in the 1XX, 4XX, 5XX and 7XX blocks. In the future, the MARC Advisory Committee may want to consider such additions to the format, but given the fact that there is no immediate need for these fields based on the original intention, such considerations are not part of this proposal.
