PROPOSAL NO. 2009-10: Adding subfield $3 to field 534 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

1. INTRODUCTION

The National Library of Spain has expressed a need to add subfield $3 (Materials specified) to field 534 (Original Version Note) to indicate the part of a multi-component item to which the other data in the field refers. The types of multi-component items of concern to the National Library of Spain are multivolume monographic entities, but the subfield would also apply to other multi-component material. The field in question is the following:

Field 534 (Original Version Note) (R)
Field Definition and Scope: Descriptive data for an original item when the main portion of the bibliographic record describes a reproduction of that item and the data differ. Details relevant to the original are given in field 534. The resource being cataloged may either be a reproduction (e.g., scanned image, or PDF), or an edition that is similar enough that it could serve as a surrogate for the original (e.g., HTML).
  • First and Second Indicators
    • Undefined - ## - Undefined
  • Subfields
    • $a - Main entry of original (NR)
    • $b - Edition statement of original (NR)

    • $f - Series statement of original (R)

    • $8 - Field link and sequence number (R)

2. DISCUSSION

Use of subfield $3 in field 534 (Original version note) would be similar to the current use of subfield $3 in field 533 (Reproduction note). Fields 533 and 534 represent flipside versions of each other. While field 533 is used for describing reproduction information relating to the original bibliographic material recorded in the body of the record, field 534 is used to describe original version information pertaining to the reproduction cataloged in the body of the record. Subfield $3 has been used in field 533 to distinguish parts of the resource to which the information applies. As in field 533, subfield $3 in field 534 would specify the parts of the original version from which the reproduction recorded in the main body of the record were made.

3. EXAMPLE

534 ## $3 vol. 2 $p Reproducción de la edición de: $c Madrid :
          Casa Editorial Hernando, 1924.

(In this case the second volume of the reproduction is of a different edition from the other volumes of the multivolume monograph.)

4. PROPOSED CHANGES
