REVISED:
NAME: Additional Corporate Body Attributes for RDA in the MARC 21 Authority Format
SOURCE: RDA/MARC Working Group
SUMMARY: This paper proposes to establish a new field, 368, in the MARC 21 Authority Format for additional attributes of corporate bodies that are identified in RDA.
KEYWORDS: Field 368 (AD); Type of corporate body (AD); Type of jurisdiction (AD); RDA
RELATED: 2011-DP02 (Section 2.4)
STATUS/COMMENTS:
05/27/2011: Made available to the MARC community for discussion.
06/26/11 – Results of MARC Advisory Committee discussion: Approved. Adopt Option 2 as proposed.
07/19/11 - Results of LC/LAC/BL review - Agreed with the MARBI decision.
Discussion Paper 2011-DP02 (Additional Name and Resource Attributes for RDA in the MARC 21 Bibliographic and Authority Formats), in section 2.4, discussed the addition of a field to the Authority Format for the Type of Jurisdiction. That DP reflected RDA 11.7, Other Designation Associated with the Corporate Body, which called the designation “a word, phrase, or abbreviation indicating incorporation or legal status of a corporate body, or any term serving to differentiate the body from other corporate bodies, persons, etc.” During the discussion of Discussion Paper No. 2011-DP02, participants agreed in general with the proposal and specified that subfield $0 be defined to link to a record.
Three categories of attributes fall under RDA 11.7, of which only one, type of jurisdiction, was treated by the earlier Discussion Paper:
- RDA 11.7.1.4: Names not Conveying the Idea of a Corporate Body
- RDA 11.7.1.5: Type of Jurisdiction
- RDA 11.7.1.6: Other Designation
A designation to indicate the "idea" of corporate body when the type is not clear is a core element according to RDA. The Type of jurisdiction and Other designation are core elements when needed to distinguish a corporate body from another corporate body with the same name.
According to RDA, these designations may be included in the authorized access point to identify the type of corporate body (RDA 11.13.12), e.g.,
KUON (Television station)
or to disambiguate it (RDA 11.13.1.6, 11.13.1.7), e.g.,
Johann Traeg (Firm)
Church of God (Holiness)
Church of God (Seventh Day)
Guadalajara (Spain : Province)
A separate field for this information may be desirable to enrich the description of the corporate body and facilitate distinguishing corporate names if the need arises in the future.
The RDA/MARC Working Group agreed that a new field 368 could cover all three categories of other designations associated with a corporate body. Two options are presented below for the information: the first uses the first indicator to distinguish the three types of information, the second uses subfields.
Option 1: Define a new field 368 (Other Corporate Body Attribute) with an indicator to identify the type of attribute
Examples:
110 2# $a KUON (Television station)
368 0# $a Television station
110 2# $a Johann Traeg (Firm)
368 0# $a Firm
151 ## $a Cork (Ireland : County)
368 1# $a County
110 2# $a Church of God (Holiness)
368 2# $a Holiness
110 2# $a Church of God (Seventh Day)
368 2# $a Seventh Day
Option 2: Define a new field 368 (Other Corporate Body Attributes) with different subfields to identify the type of attribute.
Examples:
110 2# $a KUON (Television station)
368 ## $a Television station
110 2# $a Johann Traeg (Firm)
368 ## $a Firm
151 ## $a Cork (Ireland : County)
368 ## $b County
110 2# $a Church of God (Holiness)
368 ## $c Holiness
110 2# $a Church of God (Seventh Day)
368 ## $c Seventh Day
3.1. Option 1: In the MARC 21 Authority Format, define a new field 368 (Other Corporate Body Attribute) with an indicator to identify the type of attribute.
3.2. Option 2: In the MARC 21 Authority Format, define a new field 368 (Other Corporate Body Attributes) with different subfields to identify the type of attribute.
