About the Narrator: Dawn Ursula

Narrator Dawn Ursula in a studio with microphone and soundproofed wallsListen to this narrator tell you about herself. Hi, this is Dawn Ursula (she/her). I come to book narration and voice-over work from a career in theatre and on camera that included company membership with both Everyman Theatre and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, two Helen Hayes awards and numerous nominations, and over 20 years portraying a number of incredible characters.

One real-life character was that of Toni Stone, the first woman to play professional baseball, which she did with the Negro League. Then I was able to narrate her biography, Curveball: The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone (DB97982) by Martha Ackmann.

Other great people whose stories I've narrated include Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice (DB102000) by Nikki Grimes, Billie Holiday’s Lady Sings the Blues (DB83025) and Grace Jones's I'll Never Write My Memoirs (DB83265). Other non-biographical favorites include the nonfiction Smoke Gets in Your Eyes & Other Lessons from the Crematorium (DB80041) by Caitlin Doughty and in fiction, the poetically structured Blood Moon (DB104008) by Lucy Cuthew.

Since 2013, when I started with NLS, I've enjoyed narrating a variety of genres—with poetry becoming my favorite, including The Best American Poetry 2017 (DB93219) and Natasha Trethewey's Monument: Poems, New and Selected (DB94262). In 2020, I built a professional home recording studio and have been focused full-time on audiobook narration, voice-over work and book production. Jane Yolen’s I Am the Storm (DB104009) was one of the first books I recorded and produced!
