Subject Headings Used in the NLS Reference Collections on Visual and Physical Disabilities

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

Foreword

The Subject Headings Used in the NLS Reference Collections on Visual and Physical Disabilities is a product of several years’ work by a number of Reference Section staff members. In December 2001, the Library of Congress updated and changed subject headings that used the term “disabled” to people-first language, i.e., “People with disabilities.” The NLS Reference Section has incorporated many of these changes, as well as changes from The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), where appropriate to the NLS list.

Group subdivisions with general application are as follows:

  • Blind: people who are blind
  • Deaf-blind: people who are deaf and blind
  • People with disabilities: groups with various physical disabilities (this heading serves as the broadest or most inclusive of the group subdivisions)
  • People with visual impairments: broad term covering people who have visual impairments including blindness
  • Senior adults: individuals who are 65 years old or older

This document follows the convention of all uppercase letters for the headings and upper- and lowercase letters for terms not used as headings. The terms “see” and “sa” (see also) denote cross references.

Throughout this document, single terms have been used for literature on topics or activities pertaining to any or all disabilities, with no subdivision added. However, the topic or activity is subdivided into narrower terms when the amount of literature collected on that topic or activity warrants it. For example: BOWLING is a term used for literature on this topic pertaining to any or all disabilities, but the topic CRAFTS is subdivided into CRAFTS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES and CRAFTS FOR PEOPLE WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS.

The NLS reference collections have been weeded, obsolete items have been discarded, and headings have been revised and checked for consistency and compatibility with the NLS Reference Section holdings and with the intended structure of the listing.
