Introduction

Mysteries written for children might seem like lightweight diversions, but they can be valuable educational tools as well as entertainment. The amateur detectives in these books interact with adults and often outsmart them. They find clues, sort them out, and evaluate the suspects—all the while bringing the reader along on the journey. Plots can hinge on the ability to crack codes, use deductive logic, and analyze contradictory statements. All fiction exercises the imagination, but mysteries have the additional benefit of helping young people develop their critical skills and experience the satisfaction of having solved a puzzle.

Many authors set their plots in ordinary places. Something strange might happen in the neighborhood, at the zoo, or on a Boy Scout camping trip, and an investigator—who is much like the reader—takes action. Readers get to exercise their problem-solving skills in very familiar settings.

Some writers involve their readers in a direct way. The Encyclopedia Brown series is set up to allow readers to solve the mysteries and compare their solutions to Encyclopedia’s conclusions. David Adler’s heroine Cam Jansen uses her photographic memory to solve crimes, and the books feature memory quizzes to help readers sharpen their powers of observation.

Some mysteries incorporate a history lesson. Caroline Lawrence’s books take place during the Roman Empire and portray the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Virginia Hamilton’s The House of Dies Drear takes place in the present but deals with mysteries in a house that was a station in the Underground Railroad.

This collection of mysteries covers a wide range: classics—Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, the Boxcar Children, and Encyclopedia Brown—as well as more recent works.
