In 1937, the American Library Association (ALA) established the Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished children’s picture book of the year. Fifteen years earlier, ALA had begun honoring authors who made the most distinguished contribution to juvenile literature with the Newbery medal, and many felt the artists who produced picture books were just as deserving of recognition. The medal’s name is a tribute to Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) an illustrator whose work was considered by Maurice Sendak to be the beginning of the modern picture book. The bronze medal bears images taken from Caldecott’s illustrations.
This minibibliography features a selection of books that have been awarded the Caldecott Medal or designated as honor books, also worthy of attention. They are arranged by grade level and author. All titles in this minibibliography can be requested from your local cooperating library. The digital talking-book and braille titles can be downloaded through BARD (the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download website). Contact your local cooperating library to register for BARD.
