Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is a dream for many. Some people yearn to be their own boss while others see an opportunity to develop a product or service. The universality of this dream can be seen in the international popularity of entrepreneurial television programs. More than twenty years ago, Dragon’s Den premiered on Japanese television. In it, entrepreneurs would make a presentation about their company to a panel of potential backers to seek an investment in return for shares in their business. In the ensuing years versions of the program have been produced in more than forty countries. The US version is broadcast as Shark Tank.

Much has been written about the entrepreneur’s mindset and personality, which requires the ability to see opportunities and the courage to take risks. It is sometimes said that entrepreneurs are born, not made. However, skill is a major factor. Entrepreneurs have to develop a goal and a strategy for reaching it. They need to raise capital, develop streams of income, do market research, and focus on practices that contribute to growth. And while they can’t be afraid to take a risk, they have to be able to contain any negative outcome.

It can be daunting for both beginners and for owners with a business they want to grow to sort through possible approaches to find the best one. This minibibliography lists books by and about entrepreneurs. There are biographies and personal accounts covering entrepreneurs ranging from Madame C.J. Walker, the first African American woman to become a millionaire, to the founders of Netflix and Zipcar. The section on strategy deals with the variety of approaches to a business. Some books may have dated information; technology and social media are constantly changing and many business models have changed post-COVID. However, these books have been included because they present basic techniques.

All titles in this minibibliography can be requested from your local cooperating library. The digital talking-book titles can be downloaded through BARD (the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download website). Contact your local cooperating library to register for BARD. Registered users can also download titles on iOS and Android devices using the BARD Mobile app. To find your local cooperating library, go to www.loc.gov/nls/braille-audio-reading-materials/find-a-local-library or call toll-free 888-NLS-READ (888-657-7323).
