Percy Jackson and Mythology

Percy Jackson’s origin story is rooted in the bedtime stories Rick Riordan created for his son Haley, who was diagnosed with dyslexia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Riordan told the Guardian that Haley hated school so much that he’d crawl under the dining room table to cry and refused to do homework.

Although Haley was a reluctant reader, he was taken with Greek myths, so his father made myths into bedtime stories. When Riordan had run through all the myths he knew, Haley suggested making up new ones. And so Percy Jackson was born as a twelve-year old with dyslexia and ADHD who discovers that he is the son of the god Poseidon and therefore a demigod. At Camp Half-Blood—a summer camp for demigods—he meets the friends who will share his adventures through the years, ranging from battling monsters and mythological enemies to getting letters of recommendation for college.

Today Percy’s story encompasses three series and has been filmed for television. The books are part of a media franchise, the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, which includes the TV shows, a video game and a Broadway musical.

Rick Riordan has written novels grounded in other mythologies. One series follows the trials of Magnus Chase, a demigod whose lineage comes from the Norse god Frey. In the Kane Chronicles, two siblings find out they are descended from powerful magicians and must do battle with the gods of ancient Egypt. Riordan has also compiled several related collections of short stories that expand the adventures of his characters but are not part of any series. This minibibliography puts the various series in order and pairs each with its related books.

All of Rick Riordan’s books take place in the same world, with Percy and his friends appearing or being mentioned in the other series. But throughout the books a lot of ground is covered geographically and mythologically. The myths of Greece, Rome, Egypt and Scandinavia span hundreds of miles and thousands of years. For those who want to know more, there is a section of children’s books about Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse myths.

The Sun and the Star
by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro
"Nico, the son of Hades, and his boyfriend Will, the son of Apollo, travel to Tartarus, the deepest, darkest part of the Underworld as they attempt to rescue an old friend. As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life—literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far . . . Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades's realm. Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? And what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to 'leave something of equal value behind?'" – Provided by publisher. Commercial audiobook. 2023.

Heroes of Olympus

Marrakesh titles translated by Ignacio Gómez Calvo

Jason, Piper and Leo, three students from a school for "bad kids," find themselves at Camp Half-Blood, where they learn that they are demigods and begin a quest to free Hera, who has been imprisoned by Mother Earth herself.

Demigod Percy Jackson, still with no memory, and his new friends from Camp Jupiter, Hazel and Frank, go on a quest to free Death, but their bigger task is to unite the Greek and Roman camps so that the Prophecy of Seven can be fulfilled.

While Camp Jupiter prepares for war, Annabeth and her friends travel in the Argo II to Rome, though they worry their armored ship will appear threatening. Annabeth also has more personal concerns, including the impending prophecy and a reunion with Percy. Will he have changed?

As Percy and Annabeth fall endlessly toward Tartarus, Hazel and the crew of Argo II race to rescue them. They must find the House of Hades to open the Doors of Death—and then seal off the goddess Gaea’s forces in the Underworld.

The Greek and Roman demigods must simultaneously prevent the Earth Mother, Gaea, from waking and stop war from breaking out at Camp Half-Blood. However, one of the seven demigods must die in order to defeat Gaea.
