September 11, 2001: Personal Accounts

On September 11, 2001, nineteen men associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaida hijacked four commercial airplanes bound for the West Coast. They crashed two of the planes into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan and a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew attempted to overpower the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed that day, and many first responders are still dealing with health problems that developed from working in toxic conditions.

This minibibliography honors the stories of those who were present at all three locations, both survivors and first responders.
