Introduction
Welcome back to International Language Quarterly (ILQ), now with a new title! We've chosen to switch from “Foreign” to “International” to embrace the fact that languages other than English are not only spoken abroad, but also right here in the United States. In fact, the NLS collection includes books in Native American languages that predate the arrival of English. ILQ still has the same mission: to help you keep up with the international language books that the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) is adding to its collection. ILQ is posted to the NLS website every three months. All books listed in this publication are free to eligible individuals. Anyone living in the United States, as well as US citizens living abroad, may qualify for service if they have a temporary or permanent visual or physical, perceptual, or reading disability that prevents them from using regular print materials.
Many of our International Language books come to us from other countries via the Marrakesh Treaty (DBGs and BRGs), but you will also find books produced by NLS (DBs), produced by network libraries (DBCs) and converted from cassette tapes or CDs (DBFs). All books listed in International Language Quarterly are available for immediate download from NLS BARD, the Braille and Audio Reading Download. To use BARD, contact your local braille and talking-book library or visit http://nlsbard.loc.gov for more information. The free BARD Mobile app, available for both iOS and Android operating systems, can be used to play books directly from your personal mobile device. Talking books may also be requested from your local braille and talking-book library on cartridge if your library makes use of Duplication on Demand. Hard copies of braille books may be requested through the Braille-on-Demand pilot program. To obtain contact information for your local braille and talking-book library, visit Find Your Library or call 1-888-NLS-READ (1-888-657-7323).
This past quarter, NLS added books in twenty-nine unique languages: Albanian, Algonquian (Passamaquoddy), Amharic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Cherokee, Croatian, Czech, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Several of these languages, including Albanian, Amharic, Persian, Somali, and Urdu, come to us from Sweden via the Marrakesh Treaty. These represent some of the first books added to the NLS collection in these languages, all of which have been requested by patrons and which have been very difficult to obtain. There is one stipulation to keep in mind, however; Sweden's national law requires that copyright holders be paid if a library book is checked out for more than 6 months. In order to avoid the challenges presented by longer loans, we have added a note to these records that downloaded copies must be deleted within 6 months and loaned copies must be returned within that time frame as well. Thank you for helping patrons to follow these guidelines!
The Marrakesh Treaty also allowed us to obtain translations in Croatian and Italian of some very popular English authors, including Mary Higgins Clark, Andy Weir, Dan Brown, David Baldacci, and even Charles Dickens. Both languages continue to see significant numbers of downloads by patrons, as do the Marrakesh books in French.
It was a real challenge to decide which Spanish books to feature in this issue of ILQ, given that we added nearly 400 to the collection in the past three months. In many cases we added multiple books, even entire series, by some of the authors you see listed below; rather than try to include all of them here, one is listed below, and you and your patrons can find the additional titles in the catalog and on BARD. Some examples are the Spanish version of the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osbourne, a number of popular thrillers by Christian author Ted Dekker, as well as many books by well-known authors like Stephen King, Anne Rice, Nora Roberts, and Neil Gaiman. Along with these translations you'll also find books by original Spanish-language authors like Ximena Renzo, Brenda Navarro, Margo Glantz, and Santiago Ambao, among others.
Converted commercial audiobooks in German, Czech, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, and Urdu were added this quarter. The German titles include several winners of the German Book Prize by Antje Rávik Strubel, Lutz Seiler, and Eugen Ruge.
And finally, we loaded digitized versions of audiobooks on cassette in two Native American languages—Passamoquoddy, an Algonquian language spoken primarily in Northern Maine and across the border in Canada, and Cherokee, an Iroquoian language spoken primarily in Oklahoma and North Carolina. We have several projects in the works to facilitate the growth of our collection in Native American languages, which you'll hear more about in future issues.
Below you will find a selection of these featured titles and other popular international language books uploaded to BARD over the past three months. When available, full annotations can be found by searching for the books on BARD or NLS Catalog. While we strive to include titles and annotations in both the book's original language and English, unfortunately we do not always have access to that information. Books acquired from other countries via Marrakesh and other means sometimes reach us with no English-language cataloguing records, and we lack in-house translation expertise in some languages. Capitalization, titles, and author names listed below are based on the NLS Catalog records. For more information, visit the International Language Collection website.
Whenever possible, book titles are provided first in English translation and second in the language of the book itself. When the book's language uses a non-Roman character set, a transliteration is provided in parentheses next to the English title when available. Links are provided to download books directly from BARD.
Instructions for searching BARD
There are three options to find books in particular languages on BARD:
- Choose your preferred languages by clicking the “language preference settings” link in the description under Search the Collection on the BARD home page or by going to “Account Settings” under “My BARD.” Click “Select this link to change your language preferences.” Check the boxes next to the language(s) in which you would like to read books. Click the “Update” button. Click “Back to BARD main page” to start searching for books in your preferred languages. NLS recommends this as the most efficient method. You can ask your local braille and talking-book library to update the preferred language setting in your account for you if necessary.
- If you haven't set your preferred languages or would like to find books in a language other than your preferred languages, you can also filter for books in a particular language while browsing, such as while looking at the “Recently added books and magazines” screen. You will find a “Filter by language” dropdown menu/combo box at the top of the screen. If you choose the language you have in mind from that list and click “Go,” you will see a list of applicable books in that language. This option will not appear if the page you are browsing only includes books in one language.
- To search by keyword for books in a particular language on BARD, you can enter your search term in the main “Search the collection” edit box, then choose the language from the preferred language dropdown menu/combo box, and click “Go” to run the search.
Searching by language in the NLS Catalog
Results can be limited to a particular language on the Keyword and Advanced search screens in the NLS Catalog by entering your search term, clicking the Add Limits button, choosing your desired language from the list under the Language heading, and clicking search.
- For example, if you were looking for Spanish books by Danielle Steel, you could go to nlscatalog.loc.gov, click Keyword search, enter Steel, Danielle in the search box, choose Author/Narrator as the type of search, then click add limits, choose Spanish from the language list, and click search.
- For example, if you were looking for the Bridgertons series in French, you could go to nlscatalog.loc.gov, click Advanced search, enter Bridgertons in the search box, choose Series (KSER) as the type of search, then click add limits, choose French from the language list, and click search.
