In Brief
The 2020 census is counting on you
April 1 is Census Day, the reference day for questions on the 2020 count. Census results play a crucial part in determining how government entities allocate hundreds of billions of dollars each year for services on which communities rely. But certain groups of people historically have been undercounted in the census. We want to make sure that the people NLS and its network libraries serve—people who are blind or visually impaired, or who have a disability that makes reading regular print difficult—are aware of, and participate in, the 2020 census.
A few upcoming milestones to keep in mind: On March 12, the Census Bureau will mail households an invitation to respond to the census. For the first time, households will have three ways to respond: online, by calling a toll-free number, or by mail. The questionnaire takes less time to complete than drinking a cup of coffee. In mid-April, census workers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to collect information in person.
Visit www.census.gov External for more information about the census, or contact your network library for help locating additional resources.
Accessible tax documents
Tax season has begun. The IRS will post accessible tax documents, including fillable PDFs and downloadable braille and large-print files, on its website at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/accessible-irs-tax-products as they are developed. Watch the main NLS website for updates on when accessible-format tax documents become available from the IRS.
NLS Print/Braille Order Forms Discontinued
Due to production issues that have affected the timely delivery of the braille version of Braille Book Review, we are temporarily working with a new producer. Our goal is to allow us to deliver the publication more promptly to our readers. Issues produced on the temporary contract, beginning with the January–February 2020 issue, will not include print/braille order forms. Patrons can continue to order books by contacting their network libraries directly via phone or email. Network library contact information is available at the back of this publication.
Sports Schedules
Wondering when to catch your favorite team? NLS produces braille sports schedules for Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, and the Women’s National Basketball Association. These schedules can be subscribed to as though they were magazines by contacting your local network library. Once you’ve subscribed to a schedule, you’ll receive a fresh copy every year, released as soon as the information becomes available.
Westerns
Looking for every book we have with a Western theme? Titles in one hundred subjects—including Westerns—are available for immediate download from BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) website, https://nlsbard.loc.gov, or through the BARD Mobile app. You can search using the “Browse by Subject” pulldown menu under “Find Books” and choose the titles you’re most interested in. For example, you can find the more than two thousand Westerns titles that NLS has by choosing “Western Stories” in the pulldown. Using the online catalog Voyager and the text-only interfaces, you can search by these subject categories as well, using the same choices listed in the BARD pulldown. And remember, your local network library staff is always there to help you search for the category of books you want.
Exhibit schedule
NLS maintains an active exhibit schedule, promoting library service for the blind and print disabled at conventions around the country. Some of the events we attend target service providers such as social workers and medical professionals, while others are open to a broader community. If you attend any of the following consumer events in 2020, stop by our booth in the exhibit hall and let us know how we’re doing.
