Patron Corner

Patron Corner, presented the second Monday of the third month of the quarter, shares specific information of interest to patrons regarding an announced topic.  On Monday, December 11, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. ET, the NLS Patron Engagement Section will host the quarterly Patron Corner. The topic for this program is The Life Cycle of the Talking Book. The session will be 90 minutes and will feature the NLS Collections Division, which is responsible for all phases of book selection, production, and distribution.

The July 26, 2023, Patron Corner was a special program commemorating the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Speakers included Annette Bay Pimentel, author of All the Way to the Top, and the subject of that book, Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, who as an eight-year old with cerebral palsy crawled up the steps of the US Capitol to draw attention to the ADA. Other panelists included Scott Marshall, a retired designated Federal Officer of the FCC Advisory Committee, and Mark Richert, the International Coordinator for Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Hear the July 2023 Patron Corner now [1 hour/70MB].

March 13, 2023, the NLS Patron Engagement Section (PES) hosted the topic was Locally Produced Books – Building a Collection That Is Personal to You. The guest panel included representatives from the Texas, Utah, Missouri, and Washington State libraries. Tamara Rorie, Head of the Patron Engagement Section, moderated the panel. The discussion covered topics such as how libraries select narrators, how libraries select books, and what roles patrons can play in this process. You can listen to the March 2023 program here. September 19, 2022, the NLS Patron Engagement Section hosted a quarterly Patron Corner (postponed from September 12) on the topic "Narration: The Art of Telling the Story." The guest speakers included Celeste Lawson, narrator and head of the NLS Media Lab, and other NLS narrators on a panel.
