Digital Audiobook Players and Braille Book Readers

Learn about the equipment available to individuals who cannot read standard print or handle print materials.

2018

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, makes available two models of digital talking-book players to eligible NLS patrons. Eligible patrons may obtain their free NLS digital talking-book player, by contacting their NLS network library. Both have rechargeable batteries that last up to 40 hours, high-quality sound, navigation, and variable speed controls. The two models—standard and advanced—are compatible with digital talking-book standards known as ANSI/NISO Z39.86 and DAISY 2.0.

Many commercial digital talking-book players are also authorized to play NLS-produced talking books and magazines. However, some are not. This publication provides basic information about various commercial players. Please be aware that capabilities and supported formats change frequently. Therefore, we recommend that you verify desired features and prices, which are subject to change, with the vendor before purchasing. Weights are rounded to the nearest ounce and measurements are rounded to the nearest inch.

Several of the items listed in this publication are equipped with refreshable braille displays and the capability to read BRF files. This allows users to download braille material to their devices and read them through a panel of pins that lower and rise to form the braille characters.

NLS digital talking-book players and content are available only to individuals who qualify for the free talking-book service. To learn more about eligibility and how to apply, please visit https://www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ (1-888-657-7323).
