About the Performing Arts Encyclopedia

This is the first release of the Performing Arts Encyclopedia, a growing resource that will be updated and expanded regularly.

The Performing Arts Encyclopedia serves as a guide to the collections and resources at the Library of Congress that pertain to music, theater, and dance. Most of these collections and resources can be found in the Music Division, the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division, and the American Folklife Center, although there are additional resources available in other divisions of the Library such as the Manuscript Division and the Rare Books Division.

Browsing by subject will allow the user to retrieve lists of library collections and resources, such as finding aids, databases, online presentations, and exhibitions. The subject list is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather a reflection of what can be found at the Library of Congress. Each collection or resource has a descriptive summary and additional information when available. If the collection has been digitized or is available online, a link to it will be provided. These links generally lead to other areas of the Library's Web site, including American Memory, The Library of Congress Presents: Music, Theater and Dance, and a number of reading room Web pages.

Please note that most collections are only available by visiting the Library in Washington, D.C., in person. Contact the Library at //www.loc.gov/rr/askalib/ask-perform.html for more information on collections. Since some collections need to be retrieved from remote storage, in order to ensure the availability of materials, all researchers are advised to write or telephone the Performing Arts Reading Room prior to visiting.
