Richard Adler (1921- ) is an American composer and lyricist, the son of the distinguished pianist and pedagogue Charles Adler. With the composer and lyricist Jerry Ross he wrote the song “Rags to Riches” and produced two critically acclaimed and long-running musicals for Broadway, “The Pajama Game” and “Damn Yankees.” Both shows won Tony Awards for Best Musical and were soon adapted into successful and reasonably faithful films. Richard Adler was the producer and director for various celebrity productions in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, including the celebrated appearance of Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday” for John F.
