On top of the helmet, a dove holds a small swastika in its beak. In 1933, Adolph Hitler, who had been appointed chancellor by President von Hindenburg, demanded the right to rule by decree. The cartoonist, viewing Hitler as a comic figure, mistakenly suggests that he does not have the personality necessary for such a role. This view is consistent with the press, which emphasized Hermann Goering's power, stating that "Chancellor Hitler is merely the window-dressing." Marcus worked for the New York Times from 1908 to 1958. | |
