- Summary: Cartoon shows 13 Communist leaders convicted of conspiracy rejecting the judge's suggestion that they be deported to Russia as an alternative to jail sentences. The 13 Communists were convicted in New York on January 21, 1953 under the Smith Sedition Act and, after rejecting the judge's offer, were sentenced to 1-3 years in jail. Keith Temple (1899-1980), spent 47 years working as a lawyer in New Orleans as well as the editorial cartoonist for the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
