• Summary: Photographs include images used in Congressional Quarterly publications showing six groups of people: members of Congress, other individuals such as business, government and world leaders; presidents, Supreme Court justices, cabinet secretaries, and governors. Many of the photographs are portraits, while others show the individuals engaged in activities. Most of the photographs depict members of the U.S. Congress including Bill Archer (R-TX), Joe Biden (D-DE), Robert Dole (R-KS), Gary Franks (R-CT), Newt Gingrich (R-GA), Barbara Jordan (D-TX) at the 1992 Democratic National Convention, John Kaisich (R-OH), Bob Livingston (R-LA), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Juanita Millender McDonald (D-CA), Susan Molinari (R-NY), Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), Dan Quayle (R-IN), Bill Richardson (D-NM), Pat Schroeder, (D-CO), John Warner (R-VA), Bob Wise (D-WV) and many others. Also included are other individuals such as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, labor leaders Richard Hugh (UAW) and John Sweeney (AFL-CIO); businessmen Malcolm S. Forbes Jr. and Lee Iacocca; diplomat Richard Holbrooke, lawyer Webster Hubbell, New York mayor Edward Koch, politician and businessman Ross Perot, Polish leader Lech Walsea and Fahd, King of Saudi Arabia; and others. Also depicted are presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton (and Hillary Clinton), and George W. Bush. A few images of Andrew Jackson, Lyndon Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon and Theodore Roosevelt are also found. Supreme Court justices shown are Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, David Souter, John Paul Stevens and Clarence Thomas. Several group portraits of the court in 1937 (copy photo), 1981, 1985, 1992, 1997 are also found. Cabinet secretaries depicted include Madeleine Albright, Dick Cheney, Henry Cisneros, Robert Gates, Henry Kissinger, Janet Reno and others. Governors include Jim Edgar (IL), Kirk Fordice (MS), Parris Glendening (MD), Bill Graves (KS), Mike Huckabee (AR) , James, Fob (AL), Gary Johnson (NM), Angus King (ME), Frank O'Bannon (IN), and Tom Ridge (PA).

Within each subdivision, folders are arranged alphabetically by last name. The arrangement reflects the original order created by Congressional Quarterly (CQ).

   • Yes, the item is digitized. Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.

     As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
