With about 30 Free State guerilla fighters, Brown fought 250 pro-slavery militiamen in 1856, during the pre-Civil war "Bleeding Kansas" period when the area was a hotly contested U.S. territory. He would later move east and lead a slave rebellion in which he was captured and later hanged by U.S. forces. |
