Tracy K. Smith (photo credit: Rachel Eliza Griffiths)Tracy K. Smith was appointed by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden to serve as the 22nd Poet Laureate on June 14, 2017. Smith is the author of four books of poetry, including Wade in the Water (2018) and  Life on Mars (2011), winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Smith was reappointed for a second term on March 22, 2018.

Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction

Richard FordRichard Ford was awarded the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction on May 16, 2019, and will accept the award at the 2019 Library of Congress National Book Festival on August 31, 2019. Ford’s seven novels include The Sportswriter, the first of the Bascombe Trilogy, and Canada, winner of the Prix Femina étranger. He has also published three short story collections, as well as the New York Times bestselling novella collection Let Me Be Frank with You and a memoir, Between Them: Remembering My Parents.

WALT WHITMAN OPEN HOUSE. To celebrate Whitman's 200th birthday, the Library of Congress will present an open house featuring rarely seen collection items including draft poems, artistic renderings, and rare editions of Leaves of Grass. Filmmaker Haydn Reiss will also screen the short film “Walt Whitman: Citizen Poet,” featuring 22nd U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith and 8th U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass.
