Born to Be 3D: Digital Stewardship of Intrinsic 3D Data*
November 2, 2018
The Library of Congress
Hashtag: #B2B3D
Born-digital 3D models are an emerging content and technology area, and digital preservation approaches and stewardship requirements are not yet mainstream. Such materials constitute important cultural documentation, facilitate scientific research, and are important digital assets that are becoming part of cultural heritage collections. The Library of Congress is working to develop informed digital collection management guidelines for incoming material through projects such as the Recommended Format Statement and the Sustainability of Digital Formats website. With this event the Library of Congress can act as a community hub to explore, promote awareness, and plan for the long-term stewardship of born-digital 3D data for the research and cultural heritage communities.
Many projects working with such materials are underway within the larger data curation community, including recent grant-funded projects and research efforts. This forum will focus on shared needs of 3D data and data management for geospatial and built environment information, and the use of this data in fields such as archaeology, digital humanities, and affiliated communities. Future forums may address related topics such as 3D scanning and printing of objects, photogrammetry, virtual reality, and more.
The forum will be organized around short, lightning-talk presentations, facilitated discussions, and information sharing to foster work in this emerging community of practice.
While participation in the forum is by invitation only, blog posts, social media and shared open community notes (see link below) and other means will help inform the community about the activities and discussions. In addition, all speaker presentations are posted.

How can we help to drive momentum in our communities around 3D and support/encourage development in these and related “digital-forward” organizations? What are some of the gaps that haven’t been addressed? What would future work need to build on? What tools/infrastructure would be needed to support “software-enabled” content analysis, research, exploration, learning, and more? We will use the new Digital Strategy for the Library of Congress as a framing mechanism for the discussion. |
