Program National Book Festival

2004

With the theme “Celebrating America’s Stories”, the National Book Festival began with a gala for authors, members of Congress, and other reading advocates on Friday night in the Library’s Jefferson building. First Lady Laura Bush hosted an author breakfast at the White House the next morning.

Attendance: 85,000

Featured authors, illustrators, poets, and storytellers included:

  • Biographer Ron Chernow, whose biography Alexander Hamilton inspired the hit musical “Hamilton” four years after he spoke at the Festival.
  • Representative John Lewis
  • Children’s author Kate DiCamillo, who wrote The Tail of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie, among other beloved stories.
  • Adventure novelist Clive Cussler

Firsts:

  • Science Fiction and Fantasy Pavilion
  • The Pavilion of States doubles in size
