This was the Festival's last year on the National Mall and ran for two days with intermittent thunderstorms.
The inaugural Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction was presented to, the often elusive, Don DeLillo. He told the crowd of bookish onlookers, “We’re told the novel is a doomed object, but here is proof that is not true at all.”
At the LOC pavilion, visitors filled a large whiteboard with nominations for the Library’s “Books That Shaped the World” initiative. Suggestions ranged from the Bible and The Wealth of Nations to Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
