Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes! Charitable contributions to the Library of Congress are tax deductible.

Can I donate via mail?

Of course! To make a donation to the Library of Congress using a personal check, please make your check payable to the Library of Congress.

Please be aware that all mail (U.S. Postal Service and private carrier) sent to the Library of Congress is screened off-site for sorting and safety. Because of this, it will take longer to process donations mailed to the Library of Congress. Please allow extra time to see your donation clear and to receive a tax acknowledgment. We appreciate your patience with this process!

Can I donate over the phone?

Yes! If you prefer to speak with someone and provide your credit card information over the phone, please call our office at (202) 707-2777.

Can I donate to the Library via gifts of stock?

Yes! Donating appreciated stocks, securities, or mutual funds is a great way to support the Library of Congress with a meaningful gift while avoiding capital-gains tax and receiving a charitable tax deduction. If you wish to give to the Library via stock, please follow these instructions.

Can I donate to the Library through my Individual Retirement Account (IRA)?

Yes! The Library of Congress accepts Qualified Charitable Distributions from Individual Retirement Accounts. If you wish to give to the Library via your IRA, please follow these instructions.

Can I donate to the Library through my Donor Advised Fund?

Yes! Donor Advised Funds are an excellent and tax-advantageous way to support organizations you care about. More information can be found here.

Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes! You will receive a tax receipt for your records. If you donate online, you will receive an immediate email following your donation that can be used for tax purposes. In addition, all donation made via mail or online will be mailed a tax receipt if an address is provided. Please allow for up to 6 weeks to receive your tax receipt.

Can I restrict my donation to a specific area of the Library?

General donations made to the Library of Congress support projects and programs across all areas of the Library.

If there is an area of the Library that is particularly meaningful to you, you can restrict your donation to that area. Please add a special note to your online donation designating the restriction or include it on your check memo line. Please include your contact information in case a staff member needs to contact you with questions regarding your designation.

Can I donate books, collections, personal papers, maps or other physical materials to the Library?

The Library welcomes inquiries about physical donations. Collection donations are critical to helping expand the rich, diverse knowledgebase at the Library. However, the Library cannot accept everything and we ask that you do not send items directly to Library.
