KOUFAX, SANDY

In the first three innings in his game with the Cardinals on this date, more than half of his pitches were slow curve balls. How Taylor and Hughes and Fanok or indeed anybody can watch Koufax constantly pitch the changes of speed and not understand that they too could pitch effectively with their own changes of speed pitches is beyond me. Broglio and Shantz do pitch, for example, the slow curve frequently (Broglio not enough however), - but Fanok and Taylor could almost instantly be really great pitchers if they would use the curve ball more. This boy comes the nearest to perfection in pitching of anyone in either major league at the present time. He has more speed than Spahn and almost perfect control of a slow curve, - that really curves. He also has an exceptional fast ball and occasionally throws a change up off the fast ball. He has four pitches, - four different pitches and the best thing about Koufax that really makes him a great pitcher is the fact that he uses all four, - three of them constantly. There are several pitchers in the league and several on our club who have an assortment of pitches but they seldom use more than two, viz, the curve and fast ball.

This fellow has so much stuff and has such perfect control that I am almost compelled to believe that the way to beat him is to let everybody hit every cripple even to the point where our extra base hitters would hit with three and none. Koufax is not likely to walk anybody and men like James and White could, on occasion, be permitted to hit even three and none with nobody on the bases. This is the first time in six odd years that I have ever said anything of this sort about an opposing pitcher.
