Notes
-  A modern typescript transcription of an 1809 diary of a young woman, Sarah Ridg, who made an extended visit to Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., in 1809. She describes: the Capitol building (before it burned in 1814) in her entry for February 10th [p. 3]; preparing to attend the inaugural ball in entries February 28th through March 3rd [p. 7]; and the inaugural ceremonies at the Capitol and festivities at President Madison's home later the same day in the March 4th entry [p. 8-9]. Miss Ridg, who later married Anthony Day Schuyler of Burlington, New Jersey, and New York City, offers in this diary a charming glimpse of the new capital and its social life.
