Head-and-shoulders portrait of Uncle Sam, Census 1940.

The purpose of this guide is to assist researchers in identifying and locating selected U.S. decennial and economic census publications in the Library of Congress by connecting them to existing general reference publications and other census finding aids that provide additional information useful in identifying needed census reports.

Also included are links to web sites that contain census data products that are available online . To the extent possible, an attempt has been made to include links to Library of Congress Catalog records, which in many instances offer detailed data regarding geographic and subject coverage of census data products for a particular census report, and Library of Congress Call Numbers to expedite retrieval of census publications from the Library’s general collections.

This guide does not attempt to cover every census data report title for each decennial and economic census series. Frankly, no one guide could. Moreover, many excellent census guides are available that have been prepared by other libraries and cover a wide array of topical access points to census data reports. Although they are based on census data holdings in their respective collections, a few of them are also included in this guide for their specific detail and focus. In addition, where appropriate, information for additional locations of selected census report titles available either on microfiche via the American Statistics Index, or available as part of the government documents collection in the Newspaper and Current Periodicals Reading Room have also been provided.

It is hoped that this guide will be used as a lead-in tool to resources offering additional information to aid in identifying the appropriate census data report for research needs. It is divided into three major sections: part 1, Census Reference Publications, covers census reference publications for both the decennial and the economic censuses; part 2, Census Search Strategies contains suggested research tips and strategies for researching census data. Part 3, Current Business Reports provides web links to current business reports that update both the decennial and economic censuses and web links to other selected special censuses and data. Also included are sections on Special Censuses and selected Library of Congress catalog searches for U.S. Census materials. It is hoped that sources identified will be helpful.
