Indexing services are the primary way to access many of the historical articles found in trade literature that are not necessarily digitized. Depending on your area of research, there are many databases that the Library subscribes to that may be of interest. Some of these databases may be available to you in other venues either at a public library or through a university system, but to access the databases we subscribe to, you have to be on the campus of the Library of Congress. Many of them are archives of newspapers and their advertisements from around the country and can be helpful in finding information of a more local or regional nature.

Contains the full text of primary source material from 18th and 19th century American periodicals and newspapers.
America: History and Life
Part of the EBSCO suite of databases, this database is an index of literature covering the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. With indexing for 1,700 journals from 1964 to present, this database is a good bibliographic reference tool for students and scholars of U.S. and Canadian history.
American Periodicals Series
Like ProQuest Historical Newspapers, this database is good for general information on liquor, beer, wine, etc. from a wide variety of publications. It contains over 1,100 periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900 and includes Bonfort's Wine and Spirit Circular (1901-1916), Bonfort's Circular (1917-1918).
America's Historical Newspapers, 1690-1922
America's Historical Newspapers features full text cover-to-cover reproductions of hundreds of historic newspapers published in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Applied Science and Business Periodicals Retrospective
Index database for more than 2,000 periodicals covering events, issues and trends in the history of the applied sciences, business and industry, and technology. Includes the complete content of Industrial Arts Index (1913-1957); Applied Science & Technology Index Retrospective (1913-1983); and Business Periodicals Index Retrospective (1913-1983).

This database contains full text issues of Harper's Weekly (1857-1912) and is good for more general news and information.
Historical Statistics of the United States Millennial Edition
This is an update on the free Census-based Bicentennial Edition: Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970. It is subscription based and data and articles are downloadable.
This database collection of full-text, keyword-searchable academic journals (mostly or completely full runs) dating back to the late 17th century. Of particular interest are: Business History Review, Bell Journal of Economics and Management Science, Journal of Economic History, The Journal of Land & Public Utility Economics, etc.
Making of the Modern World
This database primary sources that track the development of the modern, western world through the lens of trade and wealth and includes related Temperance material like: "Some Thoughts on the International Temperance Meeting, Held at Antwerp in September, 1885;" "The People's Abstinence Standard and True Social Reformer;" "The British Temperance Advocate;" etc. Coverage is international.
Nineteenth Century Masterfile
This is an "Index of Indexes" for historical research prior to 1925 with over 8 million citations. It contains over 60 subject indexes to: Periodicals, Newspapers, Books, U.S. Congressional Record, U.S. and UK Government Documents, and U.S. Patents. Contains information from the print title W. F. Poole's Index to Periodical Literature.
Includes local newspapers from all over the United States. Date coverage varies depending on the newspaper. Good for research on daily events including the drive for Prohibition and its repeal.
Nineteenth Century US Newspapers Digital Archive
Contains primary source newspaper content from nearly 250 American newspapers published during the 19th century.
This database cites articles chronicling global public policy and social issues. Public Affairs Information Service provides access to over 3,600 periodicals, books, hearings, reports, gray literature, government publications, Internet resources, and other publications from 120 countries. Covers the years 1915-present.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers & Periodicals
Historical copies of the following papers are searchable and are included in imaged format. Date coverage varies from paper to paper, but this is a good source of general, company news, and advertisements. Atlanta Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Defender, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Amsterdam News, New York Times, Pittsburgh Courier, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and other papers added when purchased. American Periodicals Index is also included in this database and includes many trade and general interest titles like the North American Review, some Bonfort's Wine and Spirit Circular as well as more religious oriented publications like New York Evangelist and Christian Advocate.
Readers' Guide Retrospective
This database provides access to nearly 100 years of citations from more than 500 leading popular periodicals and magazines covering the period between 1890 and 1982.
