- Hotbot Directory: The popular search engine's recommended reference sites
- Internet Public Library's Ready Reference Collection: Provides general, annotated references organized alphabetically in broad topics
- Librarians' Resource Center: Compiled by the Special Libraries Association Toronto Chapter to facilitate information research and retrieval
- Open Directory Project: Self-described as the largest human-edited directory of the Web
- Scout Report Signpost: A research project which ended in 2000; a few of its best features have been carried over to Scout Report Archives . Self-described as containing "only the best Internet resources," it contained quick and advanced search features and a browsable index by subject headings and LC classification
- Yahoo! Reference page: Numerous subjects for basic reference and directory information
