Library of Congress Resources for St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mt. Sinai, the Monasteries of Mt. Athos, and the Greek and Armenian Patriarchates of Jerusalem Organized by Medium.

Photographs & Prints of Mt. Sinai

The manuscripts of these collections did not exist in a vacuum. They were created and preserved in monastic communities of worship and learning which have existed for hundreds of years. To grasp the full context of these texts, then, one should also glimpse the sights, the sounds, the places—in short, the world—of their original communities. Part II of this guide offers researchers a signpost towards that end.

The Library of Congress preserves a storehouse of knowledge surrounding these texts. While it would be impossible to compile a complete list of the Library’s entire collection relating to these monasteries, the following section presents a selective list of representative items from many Divisions and Reading Rooms which complement the subject matter of these three collections. Scholars have a vast array of materials from which to draw for their research, and we hope curious individuals enjoy browsing these resources as well!

Please note that every Reading Room has its own hours and policies. Researchers should check the respective websites in advance of their visits to review opening hours and confirm outside materials permitted in each Reading Room.
