Fitzgerald, best known as a translator of ancient Greek and Latin, served as Consultant in Poetry in a health-limited capacity. He arranged several programs, but did not come to the Library. Upon Fitzgerald's death on January 16, 1985, Reed Whittemore, who had served as Interim Consultant in Poetry during Fitzgerald's illness, assumed the official position of Consultant in Poetry.
