METS 2 Schema Now Available (March 3, 2025)

The METS Editorial Board is happy to release METS version 2!

After several years of drafting, community reviews, presentations at conferences (most recently a poster at iPres 2024), we are now releasing the initial version of METS 2.

METS 2 is built on the success of version 1 and focuses on:

  • improving the consistency of elements

  • reducing complexity by removing certain concepts that were initially included but only rarely used

  • simplifying the schema by removing external dependencies

  • adding more flexibility for attributes and their values

For more details and links to the schema as well as updated documentation and guidelines, see the METS 2 Schema and Documentation page.

All in all, people familiar with METS will easily recognize the overall structure, while we hope to lower the barrier for new users and implementers with this simplified version.

Also, we want to emphasize that we will continue supporting version 1 as well, both for continuity of existing preservation solutions, but also for use cases requiring the specific features of that version.
