Chapter 3: Librarian’s Ceremonial Office

Transcript

Hello, this is Carla Hayden, Fourteenth Librarian of Congress. You’re looking at the office used by Librarians of Congress from 1897 to 1980. Today, my office is just across the street in the Madison Building, but I use this space to meet dignitaries and other special guests.

Look up to the domed ceiling of this room. Do you see an owl, a lamp, and an open book? These symbols, used throughout the Jefferson Building, represent wisdom and learning. They are meant to celebrate all the values of libraries and the people, like you, who love them. I hope you enjoy your visit to the building, and to this special space. We’re so glad you’re here.
