If you live near Washington, D.C., or will be in the area on Oct. 9, be sure to come to the National Mall for the National Book Festival.

An annual event since 2001, the National Book Festival attracts book lovers from across the country to hear their favorite authors talk about their work and what inspires them to write. It's also a chance to meet many of the writers and illustrators during book-signings.

The Library of Congress, as the national library, promotes book reading and literacy, primarily through its Center for the Book, The Center for the Book was established in 1977 to use the resources and prestige of the Library to promote books, reading, libraries and literacy. Within the Library, the center is a focal point for celebrating the legacy of books and the printed word. Outside the Library, the center works closely with other organizations to foster understanding of the vital role of books, reading, libraries and literacy in society.

Affiliates of the Center for the Book are in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These state centers sponsor many events related to reading in your home state. You can access your state's center from the State Center Affiliates page.

More than 75 authors will make presentations during the Book Festival in pavilions devoted to genres such as "Children," "Fiction & Imagination," "Home & Family," "History & Biography" and "Mysteries & Thrillers." New this year is a pavilion for lovers of "Science Fiction & Fantasy."

You can see the list of authors scheduled to appear at the 2004 Book Festival, as well as a list of pavilions. This year's poster, by award-winning illustrator Floyd Cooper, will be distributed free during the festival.
