Notes
- - Significance: The American Sugar Refining Company, Brooklyn Refinery, developed and operated continuously from 1856 to 2004, was at one point the "jewel in the crown" of a sugar producing and refining empire that at its peak controlled 98 percent of the United States' refined sugar production. It is the last remaining sugar refinery along the East River in Brooklyn, an area that was once home to multiple sugar refineries and a host of other industrial activities. The refinery was also the last major active industrial site along Brooklyn's East River waterfront. The refinery is additionally significant for its intimate connection to the Havemeyers, the family most closely associated with the large-scale development of the sugar industry in the United States. Their policy of expansion and commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation led, in the late nineteenth century, to the creation of the "Sugar Trust," a monopolistic corporation that dominated the industry and generated massive wealth for various members of the Havemeyer family.
